Family-friendly Cotswold country pub and restaurant in Chalford, Stroud
Welcome to The Old Neighbourhood – now under new ownership!
‘THE BEATING HEART OF OUR VILLAGE’
Wesley Birch, who runs Birch Catering and the Ship Inn in nearby Brimscombe, which has garnered a reputation for its high-quality food and great-value range of local beers, has bought this historic pub in Chalford, formerly known as The Mechanic’s Arms, and has great plans for it.

FOLLOWING A WINNING FORMULA
As noted in the recent Stroud Times article announcing the purchase, Wesley plans to recreate the winning formula of The Ship Inn, given the size of the pub: “We’re hopeful we can get up to about 55 covers at The Old Neighbourhood, which is a good number and similar to what we’ve got at The Ship. That way we would have a split of roughly 50/50 between drinking and dining customers in the pub.”
“I’d like to focus on real ales – maybe three cask ales – and get through them quickly, which means the beer will always be fresh and at its best.”
Wesley also aims to recreate the character of the original pub, believed to date back to the early 19th century:
“We’ll be removing the staircase, tidying-up the bar area, opening-up the fireplace, and our ultimate goal is to try and make it look like it’s been that way for 200 years.”
There are also plans to renovate the beer garden and redesign other parts of the pub: “How incredible will that be? This will be a stunning little spot in a few weeks’ time.”
Wes will be fully supported by his family and bar manager Aaron Godwin, and they hope to fully reopen The Old Neighbourhood by the Summer.
